Folks living West of the Mississippi, who visit, let?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s say, Minneapolis, are intrigued by all the enclosed sky walks between buildings, allowing the city dwellers to basically traverse the inner-city core without stepping on the streets.
If you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve ever been to Salt Lake City, you know people there actually walk on the ground (street) in the downtown area, after taking the city?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s fine light rail system to their destinations. So when a pedestrian bridge/walkway over Main Street was proposed, former Mayor Rocky Anderson threatened to sell the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?air rights?EUR??,,????'?????<? above Main Street to prevent what he referred to as a “gerbil tube” connection to ?EUR??,,????'?????<?trap?EUR??,,????'?????<? people inside the malls.
Well, the Salt Lake City Council approved the pedestrian sky bridge back in April 2008. The steel framework for the 140-ft. sky bridge over the City Center TRAX station connecting the Crossroads and ZCMI malls went up in mid-March 2010. When completed, the skywalk will be glass walled with etched designs. Overhead panels will open. The LDS church estimates that about 1,500 construction workers are currently employed on the City Creek project.
