In these fiscally tight times Gwinnett County, Georgia has received $150,000 in Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) grants to improve I-85 interchanges with “redevelopment potential.”

The city of Suwanee received a $50,000 grant for landscape enhancements at the Interstate-85 interchange at the Suwanee Gateway. The beautification project is part of the city’s overall redevelopment plan that includes infrastructure, streetscape, transportation improvements and marketing efforts.

GDOT also awarded $50,000 grants to the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District (CID) and Gwinnett Place CID.

The Gwinnett Place project includes continuing landscape improvements at the Interstate-85, Pleasant Hill Road interchange. Joe Allen, executive director for Gwinnett Place CID, says these interchanges are really the “welcome mats” for the county and investing in landscaping sends a message the area remains successful.

Davie Biagi, the landscape architect for GDOT, notes the grants were awarded to communities with solid plans for “quality maintenance” of their beautification projects for public rights of way.

Gwinnett Village’s $125,000 aesthetic improvement project around the southwest corner of Interstate-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard is an extension of a previous $825,000 for landscaping that is all about pride in the community for residents and businesses.
