This organic-feeling backyard retreat was designed to contrast strongly with the linear, contemporary lines of the home. GAI used a combination of full range bluestone and Lannon stone cobble borders to create a fluid outdoor patio space in excess of 2,000 square feet, complete with a bar, grill, large-scale fire pit and hot tub disguised in the background. Controlled and limited plantings further emphasize the dynamic free-flowing lines of the patio in conjunction with the natural surroundings and architectural lines of the home.

GAI designed a rooftop garden using portable, commercial-grade planters installed with a variety of plant material to provide a bucolic, bohemian feel. We incorporated bamboo, serviceberry, fire engine Japanese maple, Bruns spruce, dwarf river birch trees along with assorted vines, perennials and ground covers to create a 'healthy' overgrown look and provide privacy to the rooftop garden. The space also features Persian lights, heavy timber furniture, a gas fireplace and water feature.

This garden design features multiple outdoor rooms in a combination of traditional Mediterranean-style and contemporary-style landscape architecture. The outdoor dining room beneath the pergola is in tradition of the Italianate featuring fish scale paving made out of tumbled cobbles. The design also includes a miniature classic boxwood annual formal garden complimented with fashionettes set into the concrete. The ipe deck retreat by the lakeside provides a juxtaposition to the formal gathering area and provides a destination point for the family to view Lake Michigan. The deck was set flush with grade and planters were incorporated on the lake side to eliminate the need for a railing and provide an unobstructed view.
