Funtastic Island Embodies the Spirit of Joy and Adventure by Geoff Evans, PLA, ASLA, Planning Design Group
Nestled in the heart of Owasso, Oklahoma, lies a vibrant and dynamic play destination that captures the hearts of children and families alike. Located at the north end of Owasso's Sports Complex is one the most popular parks in the city, Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad, which offers an array of thrilling features designed to stimulate the senses and foster unforgettable memories. This is a destination for, not only the citizens of Owasso and their families, but also the visitors from surrounding communities, for daycare centers, churches, schools, and other groups. The playground and splashpad are great amenities to the adjacent sports complex as they provide opportunities for all ages, skill levels, and even areas to hang out and enjoy the park. Through the design of this project, Planning Design Group (PDG) set a goal to provide the city with a project that would become a draw for families who want alternatives to do everything - or nothing at all. Background Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad holds a rich history within the Owasso community. The original playground was a community project that was completed in 2005 and was designed and built by volunteers. This was one of the premier playgrounds in the Tulsa metro area for years that users would travel from miles away to visit. It included swings, climbing equipment, slides, picnic facilities, and a restroom building. This was one of the largest playground pieces in the state, provided numerous play opportunities, and had many inclusive design features. The people of Owasso loved this playground well through the years, but city officials felt that some of the park's pieces were in need of replacing, while other end-of-life, damaged play pieces couldn't be replaced. This led to the city using Vision 2025 funding to pay for the upgrade, marking a major transition from the original playground that was built by the community in partnership with the city of Owasso.
