Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad

Funtastic Island Embodies the Spirit of Joy and Adventure
by Geoff Evans, PLA, ASLA, Planning Design Group

At the Owasso Sports Complex in Owasso, Oklahoma, landscape architecture firm, Planning Design Group (PDG) was the lead consultant and responsible for master planning, construction drawings, and construction administration for the two-acre Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad. This new area is located at the north end of the sports complex. Adjacent to the east of the facility is the Owasso Veterans Memorial.
The safety surfacing is composed of poured-in-place rubber in various shades of blue and patches of green synthetic lawn. These colors continue the island theme as the blues represent moving water approaching the green "islands."
Numerous tunnels scattered around the playground provide children with alternative play areas and routes for accessing other play features. Tunnels run throughout the site, and they vary in length. The playground has large, cantilevered umbrellas with radial structures, umbrellas, and multi-level "kite" structures all supplied by USA Shade. Colors for the shade structures vary from off-white cream, tan, and blue.

This large structure, called The Alpha Tower, stands over 20 feet tall. It is designed to bring height to the playground with multiple climbing opportunities. Innovative climbers invite kids to scale the outside up to the 4' and 8' decks, or reach the decks by climbing inside, ultimately reaching the fully enclosed 12' deck. The Double Swoosh Slide lets kids slide, two at a time, from the 8' deck and the curvy Whooshwinder Slide offers a thrilling ride from the very top.
Landscape Structures provided the play equipment for the park including this element called the Ring Pull which lets kids do pull-ups and hang around.
To the south of the playground lies a 4,500-square-foot splashpad capable of running roughly 125-130 gallons per minute. The splashpad contains a dumping bucket, ground sprays, upright elements, and other interactive elements. This area also features a similar, island themed, color scheme as the playground.

Nestled in the heart of Owasso, Oklahoma, lies a vibrant and dynamic play destination that captures the hearts of children and families alike. Located at the north end of Owasso's Sports Complex is one the most popular parks in the city, Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad, which offers an array of thrilling features designed to stimulate the senses and foster unforgettable memories. This is a destination for, not only the citizens of Owasso and their families, but also the visitors from surrounding communities, for daycare centers, churches, schools, and other groups. The playground and splashpad are great amenities to the adjacent sports complex as they provide opportunities for all ages, skill levels, and even areas to hang out and enjoy the park. Through the design of this project, Planning Design Group (PDG) set a goal to provide the city with a project that would become a draw for families who want alternatives to do everything - or nothing at all.

Background
Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad holds a rich history within the Owasso community. The original playground was a community project that was completed in 2005 and was designed and built by volunteers. This was one of the premier playgrounds in the Tulsa metro area for years that users would travel from miles away to visit. It included swings, climbing equipment, slides, picnic facilities, and a restroom building. This was one of the largest playground pieces in the state, provided numerous play opportunities, and had many inclusive design features. The people of Owasso loved this playground well through the years, but city officials felt that some of the park's pieces were in need of replacing, while other end-of-life, damaged play pieces couldn't be replaced. This led to the city using Vision 2025 funding to pay for the upgrade, marking a major transition from the original playground that was built by the community in partnership with the city of Owasso.

The play area is adorned with colorful structures, children themed sculptures, and interactive elements. The "Island Theme" is present everywhere, in the blue colors of the poured-in-place rubber surfacing, green turf islands, upright elements within the splashpad, color selections, lounging area, and all other items. The site features a diverse range of equipment, including towers, slides, tunnels, spinners, rocking elements, climbing apparatuses, water play elements, and a renovated swing area, catering to children of all ages and abilities. The equipment, from Landscape Structures and Vortex Aquatic Structures, is constructed with durable materials to ensure longevity and withstand rigorous play and a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad excels in providing exceptional play value. The playground encourages imaginative play, fostering creativity and social interaction among children. The splashpad offers refreshing relief on hot summer days, inviting visitors to splash, spray, and engage in water play adventures. The dumping bucket within the splashpad draws kids to a large yellow bucket that tips over, dropping 50-gallons of water onto the kids' heads below. The addition of inclusive design elements allows Funtastic Island to provide children of all abilities with areas to play on and alongside the other children. Transfer stations, sensory play elements, and adaptive swings provide an inclusive environment where every child can thrive and create
lasting memories.

Safety is a top priority at Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad. The equipment was inspected by certified professionals to ensure compliance with all safety standards. Soft, impact-absorbing surfaces are installed beneath play structures, reducing the risk of injuries due to falls. Clear signage and well-maintained pathways guide visitors throughout the site, minimizing potential hazards.

Funtastic Island offers a host of amenities to enhance the overall experience. Shaded picnic areas provide a perfect spot for families to relax and enjoy a meal together. Seating areas are provided with traditional benches, ADA accessible picnic tables, and alternative seating with loungers. Restrooms and parking are conveniently located nearby, ensuring comfort and convenience for visitors. The sports complex park area also incorporates well-maintained walking trails, promoting an active lifestyle and encouraging exploration of the surrounding
natural beauty.
Owasso's Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad is more than just a play area; it's a testament to the power of imagination, inclusivity, and community collaboration. From its captivating design and diverse equipment to its emphasis on safety and inclusiveness, Funtastic Island embodies the spirit of joy and adventure. As families gather to witness the laughter and smiles of children, we are reminded of the profound impact such spaces have on our communities. Funtastic Island Playground and Splashpad will continue to be a cherished destination where children can explore, create, and make cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
