FSC Shares Energy Recommendations with the EU Commission

Recommendations Related to Greenhouse Gases, Woody Biomass, and More

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) relayed recommendations to the European Union Commission about the use of sustainable energy.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) shared three recommendations with the European Union Commission on sustainability measures related to greenhouse gases and sourcing of woody biomass. FSC stated that renewable energy is a key component in combating climate change by reducing the EU's dependency on imported fossil fuels. To reach emission goals established by the EU, FSC recommends to "reinforce the REDII sustainability criteria for bioenergy in line with the EU Green Deal climate ambition, prioritize the "cascading use of wood" principle and phase out subsidies for burning any primary woody biomass, and move from the risk-based approach to the precautionary approach so that the risk assessment can focus on forest holding (instead of the much broader sourcing area) and mitigation measures, such as FSC certification, are always required."
