Frederick Law Olmstead Walking Tour by Georgia Chapter ASLA

Frederick Law Olmstead may not have attended college, but he forever changed the landscape of America.

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has named Frederick Law Olmstead the ''father'' of landscape architecture. Although Olmstead performed a variety of jobs, the one that changed history was becoming New York Central Park?EUR??,,????'???s superintendent in 1857.

As the superintendent of the park he served as the administrator, then architect-in-chief of Central Park's construction. Next, he served as the administrative head of the US Sanitary Commission, which was the forerunner of the American Red Cross. Finally his last job, before forming his own firm, was managing of the vast Mariposa gold mining estate in California.

In addition to designing for urban life, Olmsted was anxious to preserve areas of natural beauty for future public enjoyment. He served as the first head of the commission in charge of preserving Yosemite Valley and was a leader in establishing the Niagara Reservation. In August 1903 he died, but his work lives on and is celebrated with the 2012 Frederick Law Olmstead Luncheon and Walking Tour sponsored by the ASLA-GA.

On Thursday, April 26th the Georgia Chapter ASLA (ASLA-GA) asks fellow landscape architects to attend the annual Frederick Law Olmsted Luncheon. This will be held within the Druid Hills neighborhood, one of Olmsted?EUR??,,????'???s final commissions. A new component of the event is a walking tour that will qualify for two CEU credits for maintaining state licensure.

The three tour speakers, Spencer Tunnell, Wright Marshall and Mark McDonald specialize in the fields of landscape architecture, architecture and historic preservation. Stan Skalka, co-founder of Victor Stanley Inc, will give the keynote address and the local Oak Grove Market in Decatur will cater the luncheon.
