Located along one of the fairways of the Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, this Texas Tuscan-style house makes use of every square foot on the property for courtyards and hidden landscaped alcoves. The design called for each courtyard to have its own identity and function, and be directly associated to the interior space. A landscape of colorful plantings and water are the focal points and unifying elements.

Because of the site topography, and to capitalize on the golf course view, the main entrance is more than 12 feet above street level, which created a design challenge to comfortably access the front door.

With the extent of the grading and the new house footprint, three large oak trees were relocated prior to starting the earthwork. The architect designed two entrance points from the street: one for the owner?EUR??,,????'???s driveway on the west side, and one for guests on the east side. The driveway court was set at street level, with a set of stairs leading eight feet up to an intimate water garden visible from the kitchen. Turning right at the water garden, one rises three feet to the entry level, where a giant floor-to-ceiling aquarium divides the outdoors from in, providing the first glimpse into the house.

Fire and water elements combine as a centerpiece for the rear patio. The custom copper weir (Fountains Unique) spills into the runnel, which connects to the main pool. Inside the fire pit, the copper water basin (middle) surrounds glass rocks from which the fire rises.

On the east side of the home, guests arrive on a cobbled courtyard loggia reminiscent of the streets of Tuscany. A large bronze wall fountain with hand casts of the family is the initial welcome.

From there, up a series of broad stairs with low risers, guests encounter a series of small spaces and platform belvederes, each with its own focal point. At the top level is a linear courtyard with koi ponds framed by Savannah Holly trees. A tile wall was designed in the middle of the fountain to provide a screen between the owner?EUR??,,????'???s bath and the guest quarters across the court.

Tucked into an intimate corner of the auto court, three copper tube spouts were inserted into handcrafted limestone pieces by Woodlake Outdoor, the masonry contractor for the project.

Turning the corner to the east side of the home is a narrow side yard garden, along whose length runs a rill fountain inspired by the Villa d?EUR??,,????'???Este in Tivoli. The fountain has handcrafted spouts and ceramic tiles, with a row of copper lanterns perched above the fountains.

In the rear garden, all views are open to the golf course. On the east side, the master bedroom opens to a simple yet elegant lawn area focusing on a central sculptural piece; to the west is an artificial putting green that provides year-round enjoyment and practice of the game. At the center of the yard all eyes focus on the glass fire pit and outdoor kitchen. The fire pit was designed in the middle of a raised fountain for a fire/water effect.

The fountain weir spills back toward the house, then underneath the loggia, and finally cascades into the pool, tucked away in an enclosed courtyard. The pool, is an elegant rectangular design reflecting the shape of the courtyard. A tiled wall fountain spills into the pool, a focal point visible from the courtyard and the main interior spaces.

Even though the house footprint consumed much of the site, with ingenious architectural design and careful attention to every detail, a quality landscape provides a showcase for the owner?EUR??,,????'???s enjoyment and display.
