Friends of the Eastern Promenade (Friends) is sponsoring the restoration of Fort Allen Park to its ?EUR??,,????'?????<?historic grandeur from a century ago.?EUR??,,????'?????<? (https://easternpromenade.org/project-priorities/fort-allen-park-restoration-2/)
Fort Allen Park is a 1.5-mile public park on Portland, Maine?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s historic Eastern Promenade. In 1905, the Olmsted Brothers firm did the master plan for the Eastern Promenade and Fort Allen Park. Construction of the Promenade began in 1836, with work continuing off and on until 1934, while most of the park work was done between the 1880s to the 1910s.
Friends hired the design team of Martha Lyon and Regina Leonard to research the park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s history, create plans, a budget and construction documents. The Portland Historic Preservation Board and city staffs are working closely with the design team.
Fort Allen Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a Historic Landscape by Portland. As a designated historic landmark, park improvements must follow guidelines set by the Secretary of the Interior.
The park contains the original Fort Allen berm (1814) that helped protect the entrance to Portland?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s harbor. The park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s bandstand, carriage drive and overlook were built in the 1890s. A granite bench, dedicated in 1929,is the park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s monument to the Civil War.
Landscape and infrastructure changes have altered the park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s original look. The carriage drive was straightened and the central pathway and pedestrian walkways flanking the drive removed. Some historic structures were in disrepair, including the Civil War cannons, carriages and wrought iron fencing. Memorial additions (USS Portland Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial) needed to be better integrated into the landscape.
Designs for Fort Allen Park are guided by the park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s most historic significant period (1890-1930), and the Olmsteds?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? focus on pedestrian circulation, accessibility, lighting and safety. Ginkgo Biloba Magyar shade trees will be planted along the Eastern Promenade roadway at the top of Fort Allen Park, and Hawthorn Winter King trees for the interior pathways.
