Forest Service Proposes Insecticide Spraying

Spraying is proposed on approximately 100 trees at a Montana campground to combat the mountain pine beetle. Outbreaks frequently develop in lodgepole pine stands that contain well-distributed, large- diameter trees or in dense stands of pole-sized ponderosa pine.

The National Forest Service wants to spray insecticide on about 100 trees in a Bitterroot Valley, Mont., campground to fight the mountain pine beetle.

The insects have killed several large trees in the Charles Waters Campground.

This spring, the Forest Service wants to spray an insecticide marketed under the name Carbaryl. Officials say the work would be done before the campground opens for the summer.

The Forest Service ranger in Stevensville is taking written, public comment until March 26th. Correspondence can be sent to: 88 Main Street, Stevensville, MT 59870, attention District Ranger Dan Ritter.
