The Oviedo City Council in Florida made good on its commitment to promote water conservation initiatives through adoption of an ordinance that will alter the City?EUR??,,????'???s Land Development Code.
The new ordinance will make changes to landscaping, tree planting and irrigation rules that will impact both residential and commercial property owners. Officials say the amendments will ensure more efficient water use by establishing new and enhancing existing minimum standards for landscape and irrigation design, installation, and maintenance.
Some of the highlights from the new requirements include: Establishment of 40 percent as a minimum for the Low Water Use proportion in relation to the total landscaped area.
Increase from 60 to 70 percent as a minimum in the Low plus Medium Water Use Zones proportion in relation to the total landscaped area.
Establishment of a maximum of 30 percent for the use of High Water Use Zones in relation to the total landscaped area.
Landscaping for common areas, buffer yards, stormwater management facilities, and vehicular use areas shall use only high and/or medium drought tolerant turf/turf grass species.
Specific technical requirements are now included for design of irrigation systems in order to guarantee water conservation within irrigated areas.
