Leaders in Sanibel, Fla. voted unanimously to implement new fertilizer rules on the island in an effort to eradicate red tide and red drift algae on its beaches. The new rules mandate that fertilizer used cannot be made with more than two-percent phosphorous and 20-percent nitrogen, which must be of the slow release variety.

Scientist Brian LaPointe works with the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution and he specializes in algae blooms. He says every effort to reduce algae, even on an individual basis, is a good effort.

“It’s an experiment, we’ll have to wait and see. I think it may take other measures in addition to that to make this algae bloom to diminish, but I think it’s a great first step,” said LaPointe.

Those caught breaking the rules, will be given a misdemeanor charge and a $500 fine.

Officials say golf courses are excluded from the ordinance, but still have to follow other state rules.
