Weekly reporting requirements were imposed in March under a phase-1 restriction, which required a 15-percent savings in Martin and St. Lucie counties. Phase 2 took effect two weeks later, and it required a 30-percent savings on lower east and west coasts. Facilities were fined $500 for failure to report their weekly usage.
The water management district was convened in May to vote on recommendations that it adopt a phase-3 restriction for Palm Beach and Broward counties, which involves a 45-percent reduction. In addition, the board is expected to consider a mandatory 45-percent use reduction for golf courses in those counties, according to a water management district spokesperson.
Golf courses use about 3 percent of all water used in south Florida, according to the water management district. Other recreational users consume about 3 percent as well.
