Numerous other organizations have bestowed awards for Jungles’ designs. His passion for excellence reflects in all of his designs whether they be estate gardens, resort hotels, urban design, community or recreational, domestic or international. What Miami Architect, Bobby Altman said about Raymond Jungles: “Raymond looks at [landscaping] through the eyes of an artist and his work shows it. He’ll wake up in the middle of the night to come up with a unique way to do something. It’s not a business for him, it’s a compulsion.”
Raymond Jungles is a landscape architect / artist who uses nature as a means of self expression. His sensitivity and originality have attracted the attention of many. Internationally published, his gardens have won 15 design awards from the Florida Chapter of ASLA (eight of them awards of excellence) and an additional two which won the coveted Fredric B. Stresau Award given to the best project of the current year.
Dense naturalistic planting complements the boldness of the architecture at this Landes residence. The water garden invites one to the front door and was inspired by works of Roberto Burle Marx in Brazil. The sculptural space is defined at the property line with dense indigenous plantings at the front door. The illusion is produced that it is merely the edge of a clearing. What actually lies beyond is a major roadway with a colonial Williamsburg residence on the other side. Sculptural plant shapes complement the strong architecture. Coconut palms were massed to provide shade in this lawn lounging area. The owner designed the furniture and had it manufactured in her facility in Ecuador.
The resulting project epitomizes how unified spatial relationships provide the best opportunities for indoor-outdoor living. This project exemplifies the Landscape Architect?EUR??,,????'???s role in the shaping of the built environment to enhance the user?EUR??,,????'???s lifestyle, appreciation of art and nature, and the beauty of a garden. Plants were not only selected for their beauty, but for their parsimonious water requirements and appropriateness to the site. Indigenous plants were utilized to create a privacy buffer while providing habitat for local birds and insects. Landscape architects must have a thorough understanding of the built environment as well as the natural environment. This project demonstrates the importance of the landscape architect?EUR??,,????'???s involvement in the articulation of both. The community is buzzing about the new project which utilizes the entire site as well as borrowed landscape. This small scale garden/residence encompasses the universe.
The residence has a spectacular view towards the private front garden from the adjacent roadway. The louvered wood fence meets code requirements and allows passage of cooling breezes. The fence and walls become the architecture. The non-descript building fades into the garden. Color animates and unifies all elements and spaces. Across the public front porch, you can see through the gate and into the inner sanctum of the front garden. The floating concrete panel steps and porch are textured with rock salt and given a mineral patina for color. The private exterior garden room and interior space are fused to create a sense of continuity; a design philosophy employed throughout the property. The longer more narrow lap pool replaced an existing pool which was elevated from the ground plane, and too wide for the garden?EUR??,,????'???s proportion. A fountain wall built specifically on which to hang a ceramic mural by Roberto Burle Marx and his protege Haruyoshi Ono, animates the space.
