Hollis Garden, Lakeland, Fla.

Located within Lakeland?EUR??,,????'???s historic Lake Mirror Park, this new 1.2-acre garden is a gift to the citizens by the Hollis family. The city contributed in-kind work to the project. The garden?EUR??,,????'???s terraces are designed to negotiate the 14-foot drop across the site toward the lake. Sixteen individual garden rooms display a spectrum of plantings selected to represent the development of Florida from wilderness through agriculture to formal landscaping. Architectural elements reflect the influences of Addison Mizner?EUR??,,????'???s local interpretations of Spanish vernacular and Frank Lloyd Wright?EUR??,,????'???s version of Modernism at nearby Florida Southern College. A focal fountain plaza recalls Michelangelo?EUR??,,????'???s geometrical paving at the Campidoglio in Rome. A major work of sculpture installed in the garden is Jeremy Sobel?EUR??,,????'???s ?EUR??,,????'??Windows.?EUR??,,????'??

Broad Street Park

Broad Street Park, Baldwin Park, Fla.

This 5.2-acre park is located in Orlando?EUR??,,????'???s Baldwin Park community, newly created by The Baldwin Park Development Company on the 1,100-acre site of the former Naval Training Center. The community plan follows neo-traditional town planning practices, exhibiting a consistent approach to architecture and open space design. This park serves as the central gathering place for the new community?EUR??,,????'???s first neighborhoods, located along the main boulevard leading to the Village Center on the shores of Lake Baldwin. The park design focuses on three formal nodes where people can experience the 2.2-acre manmade lake: an overlook featuring a cantilevered trellis at the south approach to the park; a pedestrian bridge at the center that is the primary link between neighborhoods to the east and west; and a formal green at the north end that serves as the principal gathering space. On-site specimen live oaks that were saved and relocated anchor the ends of the bridge and shade its approaches. The formal lawn of the north green neighborhood overlooks the weir fountain that contains the upper source pool and animates the area with the sound of falling water. A walk encircling the park has occasional side paths that provide a more intimate contact with the water?EUR??,,????'???s edge. The perimeter path passes through the dense shade of several ?EUR??,,????'??cypress domes?EUR??,,????'?? that recall the great wild landscapes of Florida.

Park Avenue Streetscape

Park Avenue Streetscape, Winter Park, Fla.

Designed to ?EUR??,,????'??right size?EUR??,,????'?? the streets through the prestigious Park Avenue shopping district, the master planning and phase I construction of Winter Park?EUR??,,????'???s streetscape project was carried out by the firm in association with architects Dover Kohl & Partners. In all, 4,200 feet of pedestrian ways were improved at a cost to the municipality of $4.1 million. Travel lanes were narrowed and sidewalks widened, and traffic calming was effected. Improvements were made to landscaping, paving, site furnishings, and utilities. Specific features include additional live oaks, reused brick street paving, and new standardized trash receptacles. The project has distinctly enhanced the charm and economic health of this unique urban village.

Naples Marina Resort

Naples Marina Resort

The Heights, Tampa, Fla.

A vibrant mix of commercial and residential development is proposed on this 40 acre, post-industrial site. Through dead-end street and oversized waterfront parcels, the underutilized site has become disconnected from the City of Tampa. The proposed plan will reconnect the area?EUR??,,????'???s streets in a grid pattern similar to Downtown Tampa and reopen the district to the water. ?EUR??,,????'??Great Streets?EUR??,,????'?? will lead to a new Riverwalk, with docks and outdoor caf????(C)s, designed to connect to a comprehensive riverfront walk planned by the City. The new townhouses and residential high-rises, which are intended for a diverse population, will enjoy views of the Hillsborough River and the downtown skyline. The plan features the reuse of the Old Tampa Armature Works building as a residential tower including a possible site for a history museum. The plan also revives the existing Waterworks Building as a place for civic functions and a small caf????(C). Creating places for active and passive recreation within this urban neighborhood will reenergize the adjacent Waterworks Park as well.
