Only 20 years ago, medjool date palms were nowhere to be seen in South Florida.

That was before a nurseryman and contractor pioneered the use of the Moroccan desert native in Florida and as far north as Hilton Head, S.C., and in so doing created a whole new landscaping niche.

Nottingham trucked the palms in from California back in 1989, and now more than 100,000 of the trees, which can grow as high as 60 feet, can be found across the state.

For medjool palms, about 7 percent do not survive transplanting.

Canary Island palms have a 35-percent failure rate following transplanting.
