First Aid for Bites and Stings

Burning an embedded tick is not a recommended removal technique and might just end up killing the tick.

Removing Ticks

  • Grasp the tick with the tweezers very close to the skin.

  • Do not twist the tick. Pull with gentle, constant pressure. Pulling too hard will tear the tick and leave some behind.

  • Examine the tick to make sure all of it has been removed. Look for the tick's mouth parts to be intact.

  • If any of the tick is missing, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Save the tick in an airtight container (do not touch it).

Wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets do not leave a stinger embedded in the skin.

Bee Sting Tips

  • Get away from the bee to prevent getting stung again by reinforcements.

  • Remove any stingers immediately. The longer they're allowed to remain in the body, the more severe the reaction.

  • If the victim is allergic to bees, check to see if they have an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) and help them use it. If the victim is supposed to carry an EpiPen and does not have it, call 911 immediately!

  • Take the victim to the emergency department if the victim was stung more than 10 times, or if there are bee stings inside the nose, mouth, or throat.

First Aid Kit Necessities
  • Instant Cold Pack – to apply immediately to the site of the bite or sting. Alternate on and off to prevent tissue damage - usually 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.

  • Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen – to relieve minor pain.

  • Small-tipped tweezers – to remove bee stingers and ticks.

  • Calamine Lotion – to relieve itching.

  • Antihistamines – to slow an anaphylactic reaction (see sidebar, page 31) and to relieve itching.

  • Sting swabs – to relieve pain.

A serious allergic reaction to venom, should always be cause for concern and if it occurs, immediate medical attention is required.

Signs to watch for include:

  • Swelling (other than at the site of the bite or sting)

  • Shortness of breath

  • Heart palpitations

  • Chest pain

  • Weakness

  • Dizziness

  • Hives or redness
