Annenberg Community Beach House, Santa Monica, Calif.
The beach club site has been designed to serve the needs of a wide variety of visitors. Sustainable strategies have been employed to reduce ambient heat, light pollution, energy use and potable water use. The facility includes outdoor areas for dining, small gatherings, meetings, pool related recreation, children's play, structured active recreation and typical beach activities. The beach walk, a wide boardwalk constructed of recycled plastic lumber, follows the historic mean high tide line, forming a promenade along the west side of the club connecting the north and south parking lots to the entrances. The historic Julia Morgan pool has renovated marble pool coping and a decking of restored concrete paving with marble inserts. The picnic area, located between the pool deck and the garden terrace, west of the event house, is a defined space for outdoor eating and interactive water play. The park is located on the former Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro, which closed in 1999. The park sets new standards for sustainability, ecological responsibility and public space in Southern California, providing a unique place to visit, relax, recreate and meet people. The design for the Great Park features a constructed two-and-a-half mile canyon, a day-lighted existing stream, a large lake, a cultural terrace, a great lawn, an aviation museum, a conservatory/botanical garden and a sports park. The Great Park balloon ride, visitor's center, preview farm, children's play area and the Palm Court Arts complex (top photo) are some fun features to visit while the western sector of the park is being developed.
