Founding principal Marian Marum, ASLA, LEED AP, established the firm in 1984 with the goal of “enhancing livability through rich connections to nature.” Marian has lectured extensively on water conservation, sustainable landscapes and participated in numerous LEED and water conservation projects throughout So. California and Arizona. Project focus is on sustainable design, low-impact development, restorative landscapes, water audits, stormwater management, drought-tolerant planting, smart irrigation, urban heat island mitigation, use of permeable paving and recycled materials, and design of reclaimed water systems and facilities.
Citracado Pediatric Medical Offices, Escondido, Calif. The pediatric medical office building was created to appeal to children and be a welcoming environment. Architecture and colorful facades embrace visitors in the large arrival plaza, which was accented by ribbons of colorful paving leading to the front door. Planters, drought-tolerant shrubs and groundcovers complemented the building colors and surrounding flowering trees and shrubs. A large shade tree enclosed by a circular concrete seatwall provided a valuable shade canopy. Boulder outcroppings were added to reflect the character of the adjacent hillsides while Italian cypress trees were positioned to reflect the shape and rhythm of the building.
Pier View Way Undercrossing, Oceanside This pedestrian undercrossing createded a link between downtown Oceanside and the oceanfront pier and boardwalk. The linking tunnel crossed under a series of railroad tracks, turning an unsightly barrier into an amenity. Cool ocean breezes inspired the colorful paving. These same ocean colors were used throughout the project to set the stage for future redevelopment efforts in the downtown. Clumping palms and colorful bougainvillea enhanced the experience. Pedestrian paths were separated from bike lanes with a colorfully planted median and decorative fence rails. The decorative paving has recycled glass embedded in wave patterns. Custom bollards and powder-coated aluminum fencing also incorporate the ocean theme.
