Chris Drayer, ASLA, Landscape Architect is a sole proprietorship firm started in 1988. The principal received a BLA from the University of Oregon in 1981, and holds a BS in resource planning from Humboldt State University (Calif.). The firm specializes in residential and resort design, with an emphasis on elegant, functional hardscapes, paired with diverse and ecologically appropriate planting designs.

The landscape around a contemporary style home was completely redeveloped in phases over seven years. The clients required a landscape to accommodate large parties and a swimming pool. A notable feature is the prominent natural rock formation in the back yard. The original grading left a large pile of boulders and soil obscuring the outcrop. In regrading the site, the boulders were relocated and the original outcrop was exposed to become an important feature of the landscape. Elements include new hardscape, plantings, a reorganization of the arrival/parking areas and conceptual design for a pool house with sauna and wine cellar.

Rancho La Puerta Resort, Tecate, Baja California, Mexico
More than 40 acres of gardens at this well-known Baja health spa were remodeled over the course of 16 years as facilities were upgraded. Chris Drayer, ASLA was the principal designer and project manager, overseeing the design and execution of grading, circulation systems, terraces, fountains, swimming pools, plantings, as well as the remodeling of buildings and the construction of new ones. Paths of local brick pavers undulate gently through a Mediterranean landscape of rosemary, lavender and sages, shaded by sycamores, oaks and palms.
