Firms and Projects Announced for LAF's 2013 Case Study Program

The site (before and after) is the former location of George Washington University Hospital. The hospital was razed in 2003, and the new hospital (in background of vacant lot and in the after image) was erected in 2002. Work did not begin on the vacant lot until 2008. The lot is now the courtyard of the Avenue development. The landscape architecture is by Sasaki Associates, Inc.

Twenty design firms and 24 built projects have been selected for the Landscape Architecture Foundation's (LAF's) 2013 Case Study Investigation (CSI) program https://www.lafoundation.org/research/case-study-investigation. CSI is a research collaboration that matches LAF-funded faculty-student research teams with leading practitioners to document the benefits of exemplary high-performing landscape projects. LAF reports over 30 firms applied to participate. Projects were selected based on design innovation, potential to produce comprehensive quantified benefits, availability of baseline information and the firm's commitment to the research collaboration.

Participants from each firm will work on teams with faculty research fellows www.lafoundation.org/news-events/blog/2013/02/21/2013-research-fellows and student research assistants to evaluate the performance of the projects, and produce case study briefs for LAF's Landscape Performance Series (LPS). LPS is an online interactive set of resources to give designers, agencies and advocates tools to quantify the benefits of landscaping, and make the case for sustainable landscape solutions.
