According to company spokesmen, the original bridges date back to the 1920's and their superstructures are structurally deficient and in need of replacement. The bridges are two spans each, approximately 120 feet long and located 500 feet apart. The bridges are 40 feet curb-to-curb with seven-foot sidewalks on both sides.
The bridges span canals which are within, and an integral part of, the historic district in Holyoke that once served the mills which made the region famous. The canal system is still in operation today.
