Fire Ants

We are near mid-November so let's look at some things we need to be doing. One of the things is fire ant control. Most all areas have, or can have, fire ant problems. During the hot dry weather the ants stayed underground and did not make many hills. We thought they were under control because we didn't see any. They were hiding in the flowerbeds, lawn sod and areas around the lots. With the rain they have started building mounds again. Now is the time to treat the mounds before they get too big and start multiplying.

Check the areas and treat the mounds. You can get good fire ant control chemicals in granules, sprays or even dusts. Read the directions. Some recommend watering the chemicals in after application. These can go out just before a rain or use a hose to wet the mound. Large areas can be treated with granules broadcast with a fertilizer spreader. Check with your local garden center or farm store. Some have spreaders to rent or just borrow! Fire ants you kill now you don't need to worry about them or their little ones come spring.
