The Arizona Cardinals new home features an innovative, 17-million-lb. tray that takes the turf out into the sunlight for growth and irrigation. It takes about an hour to roll into the stadium for game time.

The first Arizona Cardinals football game at their new stadium was on August 12 against the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. When the teams hit the field at Cardinals Stadium, a domed structure with a retractable roof, they played on a traditional outdoor surface.

Over the past couple of weeks, routine tests and maintenance have been conducted on the 17-million pound field tray that holds the natural grass playing surface for the stadium.

?EUR??,,????'??Two weeks ago we did some small moving and then at one point we moved the tray halfway into the stadium,?EUR??,,????'?? Bob Aylesworth, Executive Vice President of Hunt Construction, said. ?EUR??,,????'??We were doing some initial mechanization back checks which included some alignment verification and things went well.?EUR??,,????'??

After these tests, workers moved the field tray all the way inside of the building.

?EUR??,,????'??What we did is we cycled the field,?EUR??,,????'?? continued Aylesworth. ?EUR??,,????'??By that I mean we moved it in and out, kind of like you are doing a lap in your pool. It?EUR??,,????'???s a technical process of getting something ready to go. It is pretty rigorous, very technical and a lot of engineering.?EUR??,,????'??

The unique rollout natural-grass playing field is contained in a single tray measuring 234 feet wide and 403 feet long. It is the first completely retractable field in the United States and will be positioned inside the stadium on game days to offer the preferred natural-grass playing surface for football. It will remain outside the stadium for the remaining 350+ days of the year to receive sunlight and watering.

The field tray is powered by electronic motors mounted on steel wheels riding on tracks embedded in the concrete floor and takes approximately 45-60 minutes to completely move into place.

Recognized by BusinessWeek as one of the 10 most impressive sports structures in the world, Cardinals Stadium will host Super Bowl XLII in February of 2008. It will also be the annual site of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and will host the first-ever Bowl Championship Series title game in January of 2007. The stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 63,000 with the ability to expand to 73,000 for mega-events.
