Feriton Spur Park Expansion

Kirkland, Washington
by Facet

The expansion of Feriton Spur Park exemplifies how landscape architecture creates beautiful, resilient spaces that promote community health and well-being. The project-a collaboration of City of Kirkland, Google, SRM Development, and the Kirkland Downtown Association-demonstrates the value of public-partnerships in advancing civic projects for community placemaking.

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Feriton Spur Park Expansion is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The expansion of Feriton Spur Park reimagines a former industrial rail corridor as a vibrant public destination that serves the community's social, cultural, and recreational needs. The design honors Kirkland's history of makers and innovators. Every detail, from the hand-restored components of the historic Kalakala ferry to the custom benches, gates, and interpretive markers, relates to the site's unique history and reflects the care and skill of local craftsmen. By celebrating local heritage and contemporary local artistry, the park fosters a powerful connection between past and present.

Feriton Spur Park offers a healthy, inclusive, and joyful environment for city residents and beyond, that is strengthened by its location on a popular regional multi-use trail. Intentional repetition of features of the existing park carries through the expansion, such as site paving and lighting, visually connecting both spaces to create the feeling of one park. Public restrooms, a splash park, event space, and pickleball court provide inclusive amenities. A locally-managed donation garden grows healthy produce for food banks; and a brewer's tasting room provides gathering space in a historical caboose. Feriton Spur Park engages visitors as Kirkland's ongoing history.

The ASLA Washington Chapter recently honored the expansion of Feriton Spur Park with a Merit Award.
