ASLA Chapter: Upstate New York Category: Knowledge University: Cornell University, Associate Professor Education: BSLA, Cornell University; MLA Harvard GSD; PhD Oxford University Most notable professional accomplishments: Excavating some of the most important examples of ancient landscape architecture; developing methods of landscape architectural archaeology for all periods and places; discovery of the maritime palace of Herod the Great at Caesarea, Israel, the site of the imprisonment of the Apostle Paul before his martyrdom in Rome. Thoughts on being elected to the Council of Fellows: It is a great honor to be recognized by the profession for my work in the archaeology of ancient landscape architecture. I have used my landscape architecture design training in all of my archaeological work throughout the years and am grateful for the perspective it has given me. ???????(R)?EUR??,,????'?EUR??,,?EUR I have gained a deep respect in my work for the professional knowledge of the anonymous designers who conceived and built the great landscapes of the ancient world that continue to influence us today: the tombs of Dier el Bahri, the mausoleum at Helicarnassus, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the many gardens they inspired, the public parks of ancient Rome, as well as the many thoughtfully altered landscapes that served inhabitants for milennia afterwards. We often think that landscape architecture is a somewhat ephemeral art, yet I find that much of our work can endure and shape future landscapes and enhance lives for milennia. ???????(R)?EUR??,,????'?EUR??,,?EUR
