My most notable professional accomplishments are rooted in the way I work. Listening to clients is the first step of the design process; at the same time, I like to think of the garden and landscape in the context of a big idea. I engage in ongoing self-reflection, emphasizing the integration of landscape and architecture to create landscapes that can act as places of refuge. Some of the projects which best exemplify these principles are Colorado Center in Santa Monica for Tishman Speyer; the Santa Monica Public Library, with Moore, Ruble, Yudell; and the Claire Trevor Arts Plaza at the University of California, Irvine, with Maya Lin. I am also proud of my book, with Marie Botnick, about the historical relationship of landscape and architecture: Private Landscapes: Modernist Gardens in Southern California, published by Princeton Architectural Press.

Thoughts on being elected to Council of Fellows: I am honored to be part of such a creative group of landscape architects. Being honored as a Fellow makes me want to work harder and reflect more, not less!
