My interest in the field began in the Hudson Valley--a place of immense significance in the history of American scenic culture, but by the 1960s a place threatened by unacceptable levels of pollution and poorly managed development. I was influenced by some great activists and stewards of the valley--surrounded by them--and so it was an environmental bent that steered me."
