Robert L. Thayer Jr. graduated from Cornell University in 1969, Pratt Institute in 1970, and Stanford University in 1971. He has worked with the University of California to improve the landscaping community. He has also contributed by working with the Colorado Department of Parks & Outdoor Recreation to improve parks and other outdoor amenities. He has been the recipient of many awards which includes the ASLA President's Cup Award for Chapter Activity in 1979 and the ASLA Merit Award for Communication in 1985. This lead to his induction as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1992.
