Greenfield West Allis Now of Waukesha, Wisconsin, part of the USA Today network, reports a curving polyethylene slide at the Reservoir Park playground in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee, made a sound like a tire blowing out the evening of June 21, leaving a small hole in the bottom of the slide and giving a 9-year old boy second-degree burns to the leg. Blisters and some thickening of the skin define second-degree burns.

A replacement slide was installed Saturday June 22, and representatives from Landscape Structures, the Delano, Minnesota-based manufacturer of the play equipment, inspected the damage on June 27.

The city has inspected the other slides at Reservoir Park, and at two other city parks that also have Landscape Structures play equipment, but found nothing amiss.

The hole in the slide was where the slide curves 180 degrees.

Landscape Structures does not think heat was the issue, as the same slide endures far greater temperatures in Arizona. The slide is made of polyethylene, a common plastic, and has a polyester powder coat meant to withstand extreme heat, moisture and UV exposure.
