Estero, Florida Roadway

By Bruce Howard & Associates
by Staff

This 1.75-mile-long section of roadway in Estero, Florida embodies all the latest techniques in Low Impact Design, Sustainability and Green / Complete Streets. To help control costs, the Village decided to modify the swale design currently existing rather than curb and gutter entire roadway. The Landscape Architect proposed utilizing spot specific landscaping to absorb the water in the swales creating bio-swales and rain gardens which involved carefully delineating which type of plants went where depending on how wet the anticipated location was going to be. They also custom designed the irrigation to supplement our landscape design with moisture sensors in the swales to turn off various zones during the rainy months.

The team utilized almost 70% native plantings, and our design was applauded by the Native Plant Groups in the area. All of this was tied together with a complete street package with continuous bike paths, sidewalks and streetlights.

The upcoming Stormwater and Erosion Control Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
