EPA announced that 100 new fellowships will be awarded to researchers in environmental fields of study through the agency's Science To Achieve Results program (STAR). The program provides educational support for full-time masters and doctoral level students who plan to pursue environmental careers and the focus is toward developing future leaders in environmental science, education, assessment and restoration efforts. More than 1,300 applicants compete each year for these fellowships and are subject to a rigorous review process. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) gave the STAR program an outstanding rating compared to other federal research grant programs and credited it with having improved the scientific foundation for decision making at EPA since the program began in 1995. The deadline for preliminary applications is November 23, 2004 and the awards should be made by July 21, 2005 for the fall 2005 term. Fellowship awards of up to $37,000 per year will be granted, with candidates eligible for up to three years of support. Previous fellows have included genetic approaches to biodiversity, environmental toxicology, research on watersheds and the impact of human behavior on the environment. Landscape professionals are eligible. For more information and detailed application information go to: https://es.epa.gov/ncer/rfa/2004/2005-star-grad-fellow.htm.
