EPA To Reconsider Field Burning

A federal appeals court panel has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider its authorization of grass field burning in Idaho, saying the federal agency didn’t take health and environmental impacts of the long-standing practice into account before making its decision. Environmental groups who challenged the EPA’s decision said they expect the agency to bar the practice eventually.

Kentucky bluegrass seed grown in northern Idaho is shipped across the nation to be used in landscaping and golf courses. Farmers say they must burn the stubble left on the fields to improve the next year’s crop and control pests.

Field burning has gone on for years in Idaho, where it is allowed under state law but historically not under the Clean Air Act plan established for the state.

Grass field burning was banned in Washington state in 1998.
