Election Resulted in $3.7 Billion to Improve Outdoor Spaces

Environmental Measures Approved Despite Tax Increases

Among the numerous measures approved throughout the country, many resulted in increased funding for projects that encompass park enhancements designed to grow public accessibility.

In examining the results of the 2020 election it was found that the national widely supported an increase in funding for local outdoor spaces. In fact, voters throughout the country approved a collective $3.7 billion in public funding for projects related to land conservation, outdoor recreation expansion, water quality improvement, wildlife protection, and other environmental initiatives. These measures were accepted despite the raise in taxes necessary to fund them, which is in line with a survey conducted by NRPA finding eighty percent of people believe that the governmental services under the scope of parks and recreation and essential.

The Trust for Public Lands is an organization dedicate to the creation of parks and protection of outdoor spaces for people through fund raising and advocacy initiatives. In the 2020 election, The Trust for Public Lands supported 26 ballot measures in 11 different states, all of which were approved and contributed to the $3.7 million approved funding. According to the organization, these measures were voted on by individuals from "all political persuasions."
