ATLANTA ?EUR??,,????'??+ Land-based design and planning firm, EDAW, announced that the city of Nassau and the Hotel Corporation of the Bahamas will serve as both host and focal point for its 24th Annual Summer Student Program (SSP).
Currently scheduled for June 12th ?EUR??,,????'??? 26th, 12-16 elite students of landscape architecture, urban planning, economics, and environmental science from around the world will converge on the historic city center to tackle the creation of a regeneration master plan for downtown Nassau between Arawak Cay and Montague with a firm focus on the city?EUR??,,????'???s harbor.
The students will work as a team to create, present, and deliver a master plan that enhances the notion of tropical urbanism and focuses on immediate, interim and long-term development opportunities for the city center including options for relocation of commercial shipping and creation of a scenic route between Nassau?EUR??,,????'???s airport and downtown among other priorities.
?EUR??,,????'??The Bahamian Government has set among its many mandates, the challenge of transforming Bay Street, the old city of Nassau and the waterfront into one of the most attractive harbor cities in the hemisphere,?EUR??,,????'?? said Dr. Baltron Bethel, managing director for the Hotel Corporation of the Bahamas. ?EUR??,,????'??We are very excited to host EDAW?EUR??,,????'???s Summer Student Program this summer. We expect the results from this workshop to help create the heart that beats life into this process of transformation.?EUR??,,????'??
A host of invited guest speakers from within the Bahamas as well as from the United States and elsewhere will impart their vision message to the students during forum discussions and critique style sessions over the course of the two-week session.
In 2003, 15 students from around the globe were chosen from more than 110 applicants for the SSP, which was held in Beijing, China. This year?EUR??,,????'???s two week Bahamian charrette will be followed by an eight-week, paid internship in one of 24 EDAW offices in the US, Australia, Asia or Europe. EDAW expects an even greater number of applicants for 2004.
