Practical Approach for Designers and Planners

NORTH BENNINGTON, VT

Together, both volumes of Ecotourism: A Guide for Planners and Managers represent a thorough overview of current theory and practice in the field of ecotourism that enables Landscape Architects to establish strong perspective on the opportunities.

The Ecotourism Society (TES) has published a companion text to its original Ecotourism: A Guide for Planners and Managers. Following in the footsteps of the first volume published in 1993, Volume II contains up-to-date perspectives, case studies, concrete lessons learned from the field, and recommendations on future policies and strategies for ecotourism design and development.

In his forward to the first edition, David Western- the society's first president-- explains that "ecotourism incorporates both a strong commitment to nature and a sense of social responsibility. It is about creating and satisfying a hunger for nature, about exploiting tourism's potential for conservation and development, and about averting its negative impact on ecology, culture and aesthetics." Written by a combination of international practitioners and academics, Volume II includes complete and accurate information on the ecotourism market and industry; case studies of community initiatives in Africa, Latin America and Asia with analyses of the experiences gained; results and lessons learned from ecotourism planning and economic development initiatives; and refined strategies for managing visitors in protected areas.
