Eco-Tourists Ride the Internet

In the September 1997 issue, LASN will feature projects in which Landscape Architects unite destination planning and design with conservation ethics to drive ECO-TOURISM projects that meet both economic and environmental goals.

As AutoCAD and other tools on the Internet assist Landscape Architects to work beyond traditional limits, LASN expects to see international work increase among firms that have ordinarily been restricted by the logistics of time and space, travel costs, etc. The profile of firms obtaining the bulk of international work may even shift from large firms that routinely relocate entire project teams to smaller firms who can now support a small designated staff the global interface to utilize experts in the home office or subconsultants whose domestic obligations ordinarily keep them from travelling extensively.

Meanwhile, we note that for consultants working abroad, foreign language skills may not be as easy to master as Internet languages. Firms that have established particular cultural or other ties, even in countries that routinely require English as preparation for international business careers, will still have the leading edge.
