Echoes of Memory

Brentwood Park, California
by Fiore Perttula Landscape Design

This renovated home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, overlooks the canyon and is bordered by lush green hedges. The client had lived there for over three decades and desired an easy-maintenance landscape to meet their current needs while celebrating their past.

The Residential Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Echoes of Memory is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The design approach emphasized empowering the client's vision, allowing them full agency in the design process. Drawing inspiration from the client's art collection and antique pieces, the landscape architect utilized a simple and organized color palette to highlight the residence's history and maintain its original Arts and Crafts style, creating an atmosphere of elegance, permanence, and tranquility.

The landscape architect collaborated closely with the interior designer to develop concepts that enhanced the home's redesigned interiors. Each outdoor space was meticulously detailed to complement the adjacent rooms, creating a cohesive experience both inside and out. The design incorporated the client's requests, featuring a cutting rose garden, a fragrant courtyard, and a sunken garden tailored for modern living. Major areas, including the entrance streetscape, driveway, motor court, front-yard meadow, pool, and pool patios, were reimagined with clarity and simplicity to elevate the property's inherent architectural beauty.

This project exemplifies how to design a residential garden for a client with a long-standing connection to the site. Inspired by the client's memories, the new design demonstrates how a collaborative approach can create a landscape that meets functional needs while connecting to the past. This project has also won a 2024 Merit Design Award from the ASLA San Diego Chapter.
