Echo Canyon Residence

Phoenix, Arizona
by FLOOR Associates

The rear yard was transformed into an outdoor living room and pool terrace, which appear to float within the revegetated desert perimeter. The new home now provides a truly immersive living environment that belongs within its dramatic desert setting.

The Residential Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Echo Canyon Residence is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The existing mid-1970's home was inwardly focused and conveyed no sense of place within the desert southwest. The existing street presence consisted of a foreboding grade change, curving walls and a single set of narrow steps. Peeling back these layers revealed the opportunity to reinvent these spaces to capture dramatic views, create a transitional entry experience and provide a variety of exterior courtyards.

The reimagined entry draws guests up a series of broad concrete steps to the sculptural steel entry portal. Through the portal, guests enter a spacious courtyard, with views directed upward to the dramatic face of Camelback Mountain. On one side, the entry walk is flanked with raised steel planters, containing Mexican Fence Post cacti providing strong sculptural silhouettes against the white architectural walls. Opposite, a raised Bocce ball court creates both a wonderful pastime and an elegant focal element. Direct connections to the master bedroom and guest quarters include intimate garden alcoves.
