Earth, Air, Fire & Water: Orchestrating the Elements to Strike a Red Hot Note
Using bold, colorful landscape strokes, a California couple turns a ranch house renovation into an elegant domicile destination. Located in San Francisco Bay Area?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s southern region, Los Altos Hills is a rural California suburb populated by many of Silicon Valley?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s prominent leaders who enjoy its open spaces and year-round mild temperatures.
Ilbok and Woon Lee have lived here happily for years when they decided to remodel their ranch styled home. Despite the area?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s natural beauty, the home and landscape were in need of updating and improvement, especially considering the rear yard was in need of a more urbane landscape design. It felt daunting at first, but they had faith they could find the right team capable of solving their property?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s myriad site problems and create an outdoor space in keeping with their personal wants and their neighborhood?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s character.
Robert Mowat Associates, a landscape architecture and land-planning firm located in San Francisco and the Napa Valley, set out to solve both the functional and aesthetic problems that plagued the existing site. In addition to unsightly views that needed to be screened and slopes that left little usable space, there were serious considerations to contend with such as runoff from neighboring properties and a septic system that dominated the rear yard.
The first meeting between Robert Mowat and the Lees revealed that the homeowners were open to brave design ideas. They wanted a sophisticated look that steered away from traditional, homey or ?EUR??,,????'?????<?flowery?EUR??,,????'?????<? approaches. Polished, stylish and refined were buzzwords used to describe the aesthetic they were looking to achieve. Robert Mowat and the Lees developed an immediate rapport spending several hours after the initial meeting having dinner and excitedly discussing design possibilities. For the entire yearlong project, they were a dream team.
Water Runoff Mowat?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s immediate concern was the runoff caused by the hilly geography. Copious amounts of water from three adjoining uphill properties and an adjacent street traversed the site and impacted the drainage in the Lees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? rear yard where it pooled, effectively turning it into a watershed every winter. During excessive storms, the water from the Lees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? property would overflow, in turn flooding four other neighboring properties before exiting into a local creek.
Robert Mowat Associates set about to design two large drainage bioswales where water would be first cleansed and then allowed to slow itself and percolate before flowing offsite. The bioswales were placed at the edges of the property so as to not impact the more active and usable parts of the rear yard. Mowat explains, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s something I do with every project, taking a site constraint and turning it into a design opportunity.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Now the water is collected at a dry creek bed overflow point at the property?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s lowest elevation. In 2010 Northern California experienced a barrage of heavy rainstorms, but because of these bioswales the Lees and their neighbors were elated to discover their properties weren?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t flooding anymore. The civic creek now receives the runoff water from eight lots without any street contamination or property pollutants.
Grading Originally a steep 18-20 percent grade, the Lees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? property had been somewhat leveled when the home was first built in 1954. It wasn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t enough. Woon Lee says, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Our lot sloped away from our home a bit. Robert?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s suggestion to do a slight regrade made all the difference.?EUR??,,????'?????<?

Two feet of fill brought the acutely sloping rear yard up to a more visually pleasing level. No more than two feet of fill could be placed over the existing septic leach field due to specialized approvals and restrictions required by the county?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Department of Health. Robert Mowat Associates prepared numerous studies illustrating the solutions of fill placement while still allowing for the workability of the field to not be compromised.
Ultimate approvals came after months of communication and coordination amongst the firm and the county. Thanks to those efforts the Lees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? yard appears larger and better frames the views of the California coastal range in the distance.
Removable Pavers over Septic Tank The original septic system in the backyard needed to be preserved since the home wasn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t connected to the town?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s system.
Typical of California ranch homes built in the 1950s, the Lees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? house had a small brick patio off the rear of the home that served as the only usable outdoor space. Unfortunately the view from the patio was of the septic tank haphazardly hidden by a clutter of plant masses.
Precast concrete pavers lightly sandblasted were placed over compacted road base and sand?EUR??,,????'?????<??oerather than mortared in place?EUR??,,????'?????<??oemaking them easy to remove and allowing for access to the existing septic tank or the possibility of removing the tank in the future with minimal disruption to the use of the outdoor kitchen.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?These immovable underground utilities presented obstacles that ultimately revealed themselves to be pathways to great design solutions,?EUR??,,????'?????<? notes Mowat.
Colored pavers on sand allowed the fine grid of stone joints to become a contemporary expression of paving. The location of the leach field directed a form of lawn as the central green space. The designers placed decomposed golden granite fines on all paths and walks. The driveway was replaced with a multicolored pattern of interlocking pavers. While the pavers and precast stones did not account for pervious coverage, they did help the overall design to allow as much infiltration as possible.
Arbor The home itself was tastefully simple in its massing, fa?????ade color and window treatments. The slate roof is rich in color and texture, though it wasn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t showcased appropriately from the outdoor living spaces. By adding a contemporary arbor with its ordered arrangement of columns, the central entertaining space offers the home a new vibrancy and rhythmic drama. Bold rectangular columns with a deep tomato red color produce the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?heart?EUR??,,????'?????<? of the landscape design. Mowat says, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I was creating visual impact with a colorful structure that would elevate the existing architecture. The color enlivens the space and creates something more than just an arbor.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Underneath sits a dining table that adjoins a bar seating area. The L-shaped outdoor kitchen is constructed of copper sheeting, stucco and red recycled colored glass in cast concrete. The entertainment island doubles as a bar for seating that faces the cook and the views of the coastal hills beyond. The striking use of copper on two sides of the barbeque was inspired by interior designer Anne Munemitsu?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s use of a pyramidal form on an entertainment wall in the family room. Robert Mowat Associates used this interesting shape for the inspiration of the barbeque wall treatment. Mowat explains, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Copper is soft against the knees of the guests and engages the eye in an elegant expression of the material.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The cast concrete countertop with red recycled glass chips has a rectangular slot for keeping wine and drinks chilled on ice for quick access. Stainless steel storage cabinets, refrigerator, barbeque and a copper sink round out the amenities on the outdoor kitchen.
Fire Pit Los Altos Hills rarely finds itself enshrouded in San Francisco?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s symbolic mist. Though on occasion, the nearby ocean?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s fog does round over the mountains into the small valley cooling temperatures. For such instances, the team built a cast concrete fire pit filled with colored glass in order to encourage guests to cozy up. Surrounded by red flagstone the space sets the stage for overlooking the gardens, which gently sweep down from the upper patio. Another fire bowl, located off the master bedroom, punctuates the private patio and is a foreground element for the rhythmic fountain elements. Woon Lee affirms, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We would have never thought to include fire pits but have found family and friends huddled around them on chilly nights.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Fountains A unique feature of the Lees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? landscape design is the series of five square stone fountains. The stone-and-wire fountains are seen and heard from both the master bedroom and entertaining area. Town regulations strictly forbid any structure of any type or any imperious paving greater than four-feet square. Robert Mowat Associates creatively came up with a solution where each fountain would be the maximum allowed four-feet square separated by a one-foot space to allow for a more expressive and continuous water feature. Mowat notes, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?What I initially saw as an extremely constraining town code only provided me with the inspiration for a feature that would be compliant and client rewarding.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Plantings The plantings reflect a simple palette of green and seasonal color reflecting the sparse, unadorned landscape architecture. This clean plant palette consisted of low-water using plants that defined areas such as walkways, a private bedroom patio and the defining edge of the maintained lawn area.
The bisecting water flows from two different directions on the site and is channeled into green bioswales of Iris douglasiana, Gaura lindheimeri and Festuca rubra, Calomagrotis ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Karl Forester?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?.
The bioswales are lined with California sycamores, trees commonly associated with riparian environments and tolerant of periods of both wet and dry weather. The owners wanted an orchard, which they got in a sunny and dry portion of the property. Accent plantings of bougainville and giant Bird of Paradise accentuate important architectural elements. All of the plantings within the design were chosen for their tolerance to the deer population that migrates frequently through the unfenced properties in the neighborhood. After six months of construction, Robert Mowat Associates?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? careful attention to detail and the Lees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? receptiveness to daring ideas ensured the strong design concepts came to completion.
The result is a bold garden design that fits smoothly and seamlessly within the greater context of the region. More importantly, it fits the personality of the home it envelops and its inhabitants who genuinely love to call this house their home.
