EAB in Southern NY State Counties

The emerald ash borer beetle is about one half inch in length. Concerns also exist in the northern counties of Pennsylvania, due to recent detection of EAB in southern NY State counties.

With the recent detection of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in seven new counties, Bedford, Somerset, Fulton, Union, Centre, Cumberland and Clinton, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s (PDA) EAB quarantine now covers two-thirds of Pennsylvania. Concerns also exist in the northern counties of Pennsylvania, due to recent detection of EAB in southern NY State counties.

PDA has begun to quarantine counties where EAB has not yet been found, in an attempt to build a firewall around the central and eastern regions of Pennsylvania, which have not yet been affected by EAB.  Still, PDA believes that EAB will cover the entire state within 1-2 year’s time, and notes that the premier strategy taking effect now is seed collection, to preserve the species for a future time.
