The recent renovations to the streetscape in downtown Durham, N.C. and the redevelopment project at the American Tobacco Historic District have won recognition in the annual Brick Industry of America (BIA) 2008 Brick in Architecture Awards.

The Durham project was featured in the February 2008 issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News magazine. That article can be read online at: www.landscapearchitect.com/research/article/10306.

The downtown streetscape improvements won a Silver Award for paving and landscape architecture for award recipients Kimley-Horn and Associates, a Cary-based landscape architecture firm. The American Tobacco redevelopment project won a Bronze Award for paving and landscape architecture for the Atlanta landscape architecture firm Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates and Morrisville-based Fred Adams Jr. Paving Co.

In both projects, clay brick pavers by Winston-Salem-based Pine Hall Brick Co. were used.

A jury panel of architects from around the country independently reviewed and scored each of the entries. Winners came from across North America, which reinforced the national status of the awards.
