Turf still green after 158 days without water

A new lush, dark green turfgrass is now available that will tolerate severe climate and water stress. NuMex Sahara, a seed-propagated bermudagrass developed at New Mexico State University, stayed green for 158 days without water. For those concerned about water conservation and environmental accountability this drought tolerant new breed is good news.

James B. Beard, turfgrass stress physiologist at Texas A&M University who spends 70 to 80 percent of his research efforts on drought resistance research was involved with the testing of NuMex Sahara.

The turf apparently has the ability to shut down the transpiration mechanism through the formation of a wax coating over the stomata to stop water loss. Combined with the superior rooting capabilities it has the ability to remain green for long periods of time without moisture.
