Cost: Stone, brick and pavers are the most costly (flagstone is the high end: $20 a square foot; asphalt is the low end: $10 a square foot). Installation: asphalt: one to two days; concrete: about one week; interlocking pavers: about two days for a 1,000-square-ft. driveway; stone, brick: about two weeks for 1,000 square feet of flagstone; 10 days for brick. Longevity: asphalt:15-20 years; concrete:25-30 years; interlocking pavers: 20-25 years; stone/brick: 20-100 years. Advantages: asphalt: flexible surface; concrete: strength, impermeability increase with time; interlocking pavers: flexible, stronger than poured concrete and replaceable; stone/brick: variety of colors. Disadvantages: asphalt: needs sealer after one year and flexibility decreases over time; concrete: de-icing salts deteriorate surface; limited flexibiliity; interlocking pavers: pavers can shift over time for uneven surface; stone/brick: If base is skipped, driveway susceptible to damage.
