Down to Five Design Teams for St. Louis Grounds




Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen and his 1965 St. Louis Gateway Arch. The designs of the five finalists for the new park surrounding the arch will go on public display in August 2010, with final design selection in Sept. 2010.

LASN has previously reported on the design competition for the grounds surrounding the iconic Gateway Arch in St. Louis and some of the ideas for a new park and other elements to revitalize the area www.landscapeonline.com/research/article/12881.

We can now report that five design finalists have been named:

?EUR??,,????'?????<Peter Walker and Partners (Berkeley, Calif.), in collaboration with architects Foster + Partners, based in London, with offices in NYC, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong and Madrid.

?EUR??,,????'?????<Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc., Landscape Architects (Brooklyn and Cambridge), with Steven Holl Architects (NYC and Beijing).

?EUR??,,????'?????< Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (Chicago), joining forces with Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and the landscape architects at Hargreaves Associates (San Francisco, Cambridge, NYC and London).

?EUR??,,????'?????<Weiss/Manfredi, NYC, paired with Pennsylvania-based artist Mark Dion.

?EUR??,,????'?????<Behnisch Architekten (Stuttgart and Los Angeles).

The teams will now set to work on formal designs, which are scheduled for public display by the end of summer 2010. The winning design will be chosen in September.
