The Baltimore Architecture Foundation held its annual ?EUR??,,????'??City Sand?EUR??,,????'?? sculpture contest June 21, 2008 at the Baltimore Inner Harbor. Seven design teams from area architecture, engineering and landscape architectural firms competed to create sand sculptures based on the theme, ?EUR??,,????'??reasons to smile.?EUR??,,????'??

The Judges?EUR??,,????'??? award went to Mahan Rykiel Associates (MRA) for a larger than life 35 mm camera. (The pictures came out a bit grainy.)

?EUR??,,????'??We came up with a long list of things that made us smile, including the Inner Harbor, world peace, ice cream, summertime, good friends and half-day Fridays,?EUR??,,????'?? explained Joe Augstein of MRA, who had the coveted role as sand building team leader. ?EUR??,,????'??However, of all the ideas none seemed as perfect as the idea of a camera. If a camera is pointed at you, you smile. If you?EUR??,,????'???re looking at the images, they bring back the memories of the day you captured them and supply you with more smiles.?EUR??,,????'??

The competition was held from noon to 4 p.m. Each team started with a 10-foot square box of sand. The contest was sponsored by Trident, Harborplace and the Gallery, the Baltimore Architecture Foundation and partnered by General Growth Properties and Whiting Turner Contracting Co. Proceeds benefited the foundation?EUR??,,????'???s ?EUR??,,????'??Kids in Design?EUR??,,????'?? program.
