Sulfuryl fluoride gas was introduced as a replacement for methyl bromide, a widely used fumigant being phased out under the Montreal Protocol because of its ozone-destroying chemistry. Methyl bromide has been widely used for insect control in grain-storage facilities, and in intensive agriculture in arid lands where drip irrigation is combined with covering of the land with plastic sheets to control evaporation.
Public health and environmental advocates have asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to deny a request from Dow AgroSciences for a permit allowing it to perform a test release of large amounts of sulfuryl fluoride gas in four states. Researcher Jens M????????(R)?hle of Scripps says, ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????"Unfortunately, it turns out that sulfuryl fluoride is a greenhouse gas with a longer lifetime than previously assumed," says M????????(R)?hle. "This has to be taken into account before large amounts are emitted into the atmosphere."
"The hazards of using sulfuryl fluoride have not been evaluated. It is also 4,780 times as potent a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide," said Dr. Brian Hill, a staff scientist at the Pesticide Action Network. "Dow would like to sell this toxic chemical across the country ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????? and will apply to do so if this test goes well," said Craig Segall of the Sierra Club. "We?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??re asking EPA to nip this problem in the bud."
