Landscape architect Henk Koster pioneered a layered planting scheme at the Keukenhof Bulb Gardens near Lisse, Holland.

When you think of Holland, a number of images come to mind: windmills, dykes, wooden shoes, red light district ?EUR??,,????'??window shopping,?EUR??,,????'?? coffeeshops (cafes where cannabis may be purchased and consumed) and?EUR??,,????'??+tulips.

The North West Enquirer (Manchester, U.K.) reports that Hayes Garden World in Ambleside, Holland, a leading garden center in the North West of the country, expects to sell 1.5 million tulips this year. The emerging trend in the bulb business in Holland is old-fashioned varieties of bulbs and prairie-style plantings.

The secret in planting bulbs, according to landscape architect Henk Koster, is to plant bulbs close together to get stands of color and to plant in layers. He pioneered the system of planting bulbs in layers at Keukenhof. Late flowering tulips are planted lower than normal, followed by a layer of soil or compost.

Mid-season flowering daffodils are planted, and then, just below the surface, early flowering crocus or snowdrops.
