Donation to Combat Post-typhoon Mosquito-borne Illnesses

Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines in November 2013, displaced more people from their homes than Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami combined.

An estimated four million people in the Philippines were displaced when Typhoon Haiyan roared through the island nation in November 2013. Many are still homeless; living in automobiles and makeshift shelters, which poses an unprecedented challenge to relief agencies and the Philippines government.

In wet, tropical climates like found in the Philippines, health officials are especially wary of post-disaster outbreaks of mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria and dengue fever.

To help limit the risk of deadly outbreaks, Summit Chemical Company???(R)???AE???? donated 10,000 of their natural mosquito larvicide product, Mosquito Dunks???(R)???AE????, to the Philippines Shell Foundation.

"When a tragedy of this magnitude hits in a warm-weather climate where mosquito-borne illness is a serious danger, we help out whenever we can," said Jonathan Cohen, president of the chemical company.

Quantities of the natural mosquito larvicide were donated to Haiti after the devastating earthquake hit in 2010, and to the New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

The active ingredient in the product is Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, a naturally occurring bacterium that is deadly to mosquito larvae but is reported to be harmless to other insects, animals, fish, birds, people or plants.

In the USA, the product is approved for use in organic production, fish habitats and animal watering troughs. Each unit will treat up to 100 square feet of surface water, killing mosquito larvae before they can become disease-spreading adults. The same active ingredient (BTI) is also available in a granular form, which is sold under the name of Mosquito Bits???(R)???AE????.
