The 51st Colonial Williamsburg Symposium is set to explore the British passion for plants and their presentation, examining how it has shaped American approaches to gardening. "English Influences on American Gardening" will bring more than 200 gardening enthusiasts and horticultural professionals to Colonial Williamsburg for lectures, clinics and tours April 13-16, 1997. Sarah Boasberg, keynote speaker and former president of the American Horticultural Society, will discuss the English garden tradition. Lucinda Mays, curator at Callaway Gardens (See LASN August 1996 , "Storybook Garden") , will examine a number of specialized topics, including butterfly gardening. Paula Henderson, architectural and garden historian, will enhance registrants' knowledge of the Cotswold Manors and Gardens by highlighting the a unique conditions of position, climate and soil that have made British gardens so dramatic and effective. Optional master classes led by Colonial Williamsburg experts include English-inspired flower arrangements, and Landscape Architect Kent Brinkley will lead private garden and plantation tours.
