Discovering Dawson Park

San Antonio, Texas
by Dunaway

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

Tucked away on the east side of downtown San Antonio is Berkley V. and Vincent M. Dawson Park, a new green space that harmoniously blends history, community, and modern urban design.

The property, which offers stunning views of the iconic Hays Street Bridge, was acquired by the City of San Antonio following a concerted effort by a passionate citizen group. Thanks to their advocacy, the city recognized the value of this scenic overlook and ensured its protection.

Collaboration
The creation of Dawson Park has been a collaborative effort involving multiple disciplines and expertise. In addition to providing structural and civil engineering services on the project, Dunaway's Planning and Landscape Architecture team spearheaded the design process for the 1.7-acre park, which involved leading the design team in public engagement and creating a conceptual design.

Public Engagement
Community input has been a cornerstone of the design process. Public meetings, surveys, and interactive workshops allowed the team to gather feedback and ideas from residents, ensuring that the park's design reflects the needs and desires of the local community.

Innovative Design for All Ages
The park features small playground elements inspired by local architecture - offering children a place to play and explore - as well as a custom pavilion surrounded by a community garden. This garden will serve as both an aesthetic addition and an opportunity for learning - for those who want to learn more about gardening and edible plants. Additional features include a bridge and two separate skate parks at the southern end of the bridge - providing an opportunity for recreation for advanced skaters and beginners alike.

The Park is a testament to the City of San Antonio and its citizen's commitment to preserving its history while fostering spaces that individuals of all ages can enjoy.
